How to Cancel Audible and Keep Your Books

The good news first: cancelling Audible does not take your audiobooks away. The bad news is that it does take your unused credits, and most people cancel without spending them.

Audible's own guidance is blunt about both halves of this. Anything you bought is yours to keep, and any remaining membership credits are forfeited at the end of your final billing cycle. That is why the order of operations matters.

Step one: spend your credits

Credits are the part people leave on the table. A single credit buys any title in the catalogue regardless of its price, so before you cancel, go through your wish list and use every credit you have on the most expensive books you actually want. A credit converted into a book is permanent. A credit sitting in your account is worth nothing the moment you leave.

Credits also expire 12 months after they are issued even while you stay a member, so if you have been hoarding them, check the dates.

Step two: check what is Plus Catalog and what is yours

The Audible app shows borrowed Plus Catalog titles alongside books you own, which makes it easy to assume your library is bigger than it is. Anything you streamed from the Plus Catalog vanishes at the end of the billing period. If a Plus Catalog title is one you would re-listen to, buy it with a credit before you go.

Step three: cancel the membership

If Audible bills you directly:

1. Sign in at Audible.com on a desktop web browser. The mobile app has no cancel option.
2. Hover over your name and open Account Details.
3. Select Cancel membership.
4. Give a reason, then work through the offers Audible shows you.
5. Keep going until you reach a final confirmation and get an email.

Audible almost always makes a retention offer at this point, often a few months at a reduced rate or a bundle of free credits. If you were cancelling on price rather than on principle, that offer is worth taking. If you want out, keep clicking.

If Apple or Google bills you

If you subscribed through the App Store or Google Play, Audible cannot cancel it for you. Go to iPhone Settings > your name > Subscriptions, or Google Play > Payments and subscriptions > Subscriptions, and cancel there. Credits bought or issued through those stores are handled differently from credits issued by Audible directly, so check what your account says before you assume they will expire.

Pause instead of cancelling

Audible lets you pause eligible monthly plans for up to 90 days every 12 months. Annual memberships are not eligible. Pausing stops the charge without ending the membership, which is the better option if the real problem is a backlog rather than the price. You stop paying, your existing credits survive the pause, and you pick up where you left off.

Switching to a cheaper plan is the other middle option. Audible has lower-tier plans with fewer credits, and a smaller monthly charge you actually use beats a larger one you do not.

After you cancel: check these

• Confirm by email. Keep the confirmation. If nothing arrives within a few minutes, you probably stopped a screen early.
• Open the app and check your library. Owned titles should still be there and still downloadable. If something is missing, it was a Plus Catalog borrow.
• Download what matters. You can redownload owned books at any time, but having your favourites saved offline removes any doubt.
• Watch your next statement. One more charge can land if you cancelled inside the final billing window.
• Check for the neighbours. Audible is separate from Kindle Unlimited, Amazon Music Unlimited and Prime. Cancelling one does nothing to the others.

The bottom line

Spend every credit, buy any Plus Catalog title you would miss, then cancel from a desktop browser at Audible.com or from the store that bills you. Your purchased audiobooks stay in your library forever with no membership required. Your credits do not, and that is the only real money at stake in this whole process.
