How Much Does YouTube Premium Cost? Is It Worth It?

YouTube Premium got more expensive in 2026, which is a good moment to ask whether you should still be paying for it. Here is what each plan costs now and the one number that decides it.

What YouTube Premium actually includes

The full Premium plan bundles four things: no ads on YouTube videos, background play so audio keeps running when your screen is off, offline downloads, and the ad-free YouTube Music app. That last one matters more than people expect, because it is a full music streaming service in its own right.

What it costs in the US

YouTube raised US prices in April 2026, the first American increase since 2023. New subscribers paid the new rate straight away and existing members saw it from their next billing cycle.

What it costs in the UK and Canada

YouTube prices each country separately and does not raise them everywhere at once, so the safest number is the one shown in your own account. Broadly, UK individual pricing has sat around the £12 to £13 a month mark and Canadian individual pricing around C$13, with family, student and Lite tiers following the same structure as the US. Before you subscribe, sign in and check youtube.com/premium, since third-party price lists go stale quickly.

The break-even test

This is the only calculation that matters. Compare two lines:

• YouTube Music Premium on its own: $11.99 a month.
• Full YouTube Premium: $15.99 a month.

The gap is $4. So if you already pay for any music streaming service at a similar price, switching that spend to YouTube Premium gets you ad-free video for roughly four dollars. That is genuinely good value.

If you do not want a music service at all, the honest comparison is $15.99 against free YouTube with ads. At that point you are paying about $192 a year purely to skip adverts and get background play. Whether that is worth it depends on how much you actually watch. Someone watching an hour a day is paying roughly 53 cents per ad-free hour. Someone watching twice a week is paying several dollars an hour.

Cheaper ways in

• Pay annually. $159.99 versus $191.88 saves you about $32 a year, as long as you are certain you will use all twelve months.
• Use the family plan properly. At $26.99 split across a real household, the per-person cost drops well below the individual rate. Everyone must live at the same address, and Google does check.
• Student pricing. $8.99 with verification is the best deal available, but it is re-verified and does not last forever once you leave education.
• Downgrade to Music only. If the real reason you subscribed was ad-free music and offline playlists, $11.99 covers it and you keep watching video with ads.
• Skip Premium Lite unless ads are your only complaint. It costs the same as the student rate but drops background play, downloads and the Music app.

When it is not worth it

Cancel if any of these are true. You mostly watch YouTube on a TV, where ads are less disruptive and background play is irrelevant. You already pay for a music service you like and have no intention of moving. Or you signed up during a free trial and have not deliberately used a Premium feature since. That last one catches a lot of people, and it is worth checking what else is quietly renewing at the same time.

The bottom line

At $15.99 a month in the US, YouTube Premium is expensive as an ad-blocker and reasonable as a music subscription with ad-free video thrown in. If you would pay for music streaming anyway, take the annual plan and treat the extra $4 as a bargain. If you would not, ask yourself how many hours a week you really watch, do the per-hour maths, and be honest about the answer.
