Penny & Plan helps everyday readers in the United States, United Kingdom and Canada make better money decisions. We write clear, practical guides on saving, budgeting, banking fees, credit, insurance and the small recurring costs that quietly add up over a year.
We started Penny & Plan because most personal-finance advice online is either too vague to act on or written for people who already have money to invest. We focus on the decisions ordinary households actually face: which bill to cut first, how a government scheme really works, whether a subscription is worth it, and how to build a buffer when money is tight.
Who writes our guides
Our guides are produced by the Penny & Plan editorial team, a small group of writers and editors who research consumer finance across the US, UK and Canada. Because personal finance differs by country, every guide is written to reflect the real rules, programmes and regulators in each market rather than generic advice that only applies in one place.
We are not financial advisers, and nothing on this site is personalised financial, tax or investment advice. We explain how things work and cite the official sources so you can act with confidence or take an informed question to a qualified professional. See our editorial policy and disclaimer for the full detail.
How we research and fact-check
Every guide follows the same process:
- We start from a real question people search for, then map out what a reader genuinely needs to know to act, not just to feel informed.
- We source facts from primary, authoritative references - government and regulator pages (IRS, GOV.UK, the Government of Canada, the FTC, the CFPB, the EPA and equivalents), plus established consumer bodies. We link to these sources directly in each article so you can verify them yourself.
- We avoid false precision. Where an exact figure varies by household, region or year, we say so rather than inventing a number.
- We keep guides current. Each article shows a published and an updated date, and we revisit popular guides when rules, rates or prices change.
If you ever find something inaccurate or out of date, tell us and we will correct it. Accuracy on money topics matters more than being first.

How Penny & Plan makes money
Penny & Plan is free to read. We support the site through advertising, which lets us keep every guide free and open. Ads never influence our recommendations, and we do not accept payment to feature a product favourably. Our only goal in each guide is to give you the clearest, most useful answer to your question.
