Editorial Policy

This page explains exactly how our guides are made, what we will and will not publish, and how to tell us when we get something wrong.

What we publish

Penny & Plan covers everyday personal finance for readers in the United States, the United Kingdom and Canada: saving, budgeting, bills, subscriptions, banking fees and cost breakdowns. We write general educational guides. We do not publish personalised financial advice, investment recommendations, or anything that depends on your individual circumstances.

How we research

Every guide is researched before it is written, not assembled from memory or from other blogs.

  • Primary sources first. Where a figure exists, we take it from the organisation that produced it: government departments and regulators, official statistics agencies, and the companies whose prices we are quoting.
  • Named sources are listed. Guides that cite specific figures carry a Sources section at the bottom linking to the original material, with the date we last checked it.
  • Regional differences are stated, not averaged. Prices, benefits, tax rules and consumer protections differ between the US, UK and Canada. Where they differ, we say so per country instead of publishing one blended number.
  • We do not invent numbers. If a figure cannot be verified, we describe the range honestly or tell you to check the current rate rather than guessing one.

How content is produced

Our guides are produced with AI assistance, working from researched sources, and then checked against those sources before publication. We think you are entitled to know that. What matters for you is the standard the output has to meet: every factual claim must trace to a source we can link to, and anything we could not verify does not get stated as a fact.

Accuracy and updates

Prices and rules in this subject area change constantly. Streaming tiers, energy tariffs, benefit thresholds and interest rates can all move within a single year.

  • Each guide shows the date it was last updated.
  • Guides containing prices or scheme rules are revisited and refreshed rather than left to go stale.
  • Where a number is likely to change soon, we say so in the text and point you to where the current figure lives.

Even so, treat every figure here as a starting point. Always confirm the current price, rate or eligibility rule directly with the provider or the official source before you act on it.

Corrections

If you find an error, tell us and we will fix it. Email [email protected] with the article and the problem. Substantive corrections are made to the article itself and the updated date is changed so you can see it moved.

Independence and how we make money

Penny & Plan is funded by advertising, and some articles may contain affiliate links. Neither affects what we write.

  • Advertisers have no input into our articles, and no article is written or altered in exchange for payment.
  • We are not paid to recommend any specific bank, provider, card or product.
  • Where an affiliate link exists, it does not change the price you pay.
  • We regularly recommend the free option, the cheaper competitor, or cancelling altogether, because that is often the correct answer.

What we are not

We are not licensed financial advisers, accountants or brokers, and nothing on this site is regulated financial advice. For decisions that depend on your personal situation, speak to a qualified professional regulated in your own country. Our full disclaimer has the detail.
