How to Save Money on Your Next Holiday

How to Save Money on Your Next Holiday

Most holiday money advice is about finding a cheaper fare. The larger and far more reliable savings sit in rules that already apply to your booking, and that almost nobody uses.

The free cancellation window you already have

Under 14 CFR 259.5, US carriers must allow reservations to be held at the quoted fare without payment, or cancelled without penalty, for at least 24 hours after booking, as long as the reservation is made one week or more before departure.

That single rule changes how you should book. When you see a fare you are happy with, take it. You then have a full day to check hotel availability, confirm dates with whoever you are travelling with, and compare against other routes, with the price locked. Booking first and deciding second is only reckless if you forget the window closes.

When does an airline owe you a refund?

This is where real money goes unclaimed. 14 CFR Part 260 requires covered carriers to issue prompt, automatic refunds, meaning without you having to ask, in several situations.

Situation Threshold What you get
Flight cancelled Any cancellation Full refund if you decline the alternative
Significant delay or change, domestic Departing 3+ hours earlier or arriving 3+ hours later Full refund if you decline the alternative
Significant delay or change, international Departing 6+ hours earlier or arriving 6+ hours later Full refund if you decline the alternative
Checked bag delayed, domestic Not delivered within 12 hours of arrival Refund of the bag fee
Checked bag delayed, international Within 15 hours, or 30 hours for long non-stop segments Refund of the bag fee
Paid extra not provided Wi-Fi, seat selection, lounge access and similar Refund of that fee

Two details matter. First, a downgrade in class of service or a change of departure or arrival airport also counts as significant. Second, accepting a voucher or a rebooking gives up the refund. If the airline offers credit, you are entitled to know that cash was an option instead.

On timing, a refund is prompt if it lands within 7 business days for a card purchase or 20 calendar days for other payment methods, in the original form of payment, with no processing fee deducted.

What the UK pays out

The UK system works differently and is more generous in one respect: compensation is a fixed sum set by flight distance, not by ticket price.

Flight distance Delay at destination Compensation per person
Under 1,500 km 3 hours or more 220 pounds
1,500 to 3,500 km 3 hours or more 350 pounds
Over 3,500 km 3 to 4 hours 260 pounds
Over 3,500 km Over 4 hours 520 pounds

For cancellations, the same amounts apply with adjustments depending on how much notice you were given and how close the replacement flight was to your original timings. Extraordinary circumstances, such as severe weather, remove the entitlement to compensation but not to care or a refund.

Separately, and often worth more than people realise, the airline must look after you during a long delay. The UK Civil Aviation Authority sets the trigger by distance: two hours for flights under 1,500 km, three hours for 1,500 to 3,500 km, four hours for longer flights. Care means food and drink, a means of communication, and accommodation plus transfers if you are delayed overnight. If staff are overwhelmed and provide nothing, you may arrange reasonable care yourself and claim the cost back. Keep receipts. At five hours you may abandon the trip entirely and take a refund for the flights not yet flown.

Booking choices that quietly cost money

Splitting a package. In the UK, ATOL protection covers flight-inclusive package holidays, so a company failure does not leave you stranded or out of pocket. Assembling the identical trip from separate bookings often saves a modest amount and loses that protection completely. Price the protection in before you decide.

Paying in the wrong currency. When a foreign card terminal or website offers to charge you in your home currency, that is dynamic currency conversion and the exchange rate is set by the merchant's provider. Always choose the local currency and let your own bank convert.

Prepaying for things you may not use. Seat selection, priority boarding and airport parking booked months ahead are only savings if the plan holds. The refund rules above cover services not provided by the airline, not services you chose not to use.

Ignoring the shoulder season. The largest single variable in holiday cost is not the booking site but the week. Moving a trip a fortnight either side of peak school holidays typically changes flights and accommodation together.

The bottom line

Before your next trip, do three things. Use the 24-hour window to book decisively rather than hesitantly. Save the delay thresholds somewhere you can reach at an airport: 3 hours domestic, 6 hours international in the US, 3 hours to the destination for UK compensation. And keep every receipt during a disruption, because the care costs are recoverable and most people never ask.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I cancel a flight for free within 24 hours?

In the US, yes, under 14 CFR 259.5, provided you booked at least one week before departure. Carriers must either hold the reservation at the quoted fare without payment or allow cancellation without penalty for at least 24 hours. That window is what makes it safe to book a good fare while you finalise the rest of the trip.

How long does an airline have to pay a refund?

Under the US rules, refunds are prompt if made within 7 business days for credit card purchases and within 20 calendar days for cash, cheque, debit card or other payment methods. Refunds must be in the original form of payment unless you agree to a cash equivalent, and the carrier may not keep a processing fee.

Do I get compensation for a delayed flight in the UK?

If you arrive more than three hours late and the cause was not an extraordinary circumstance, yes. The UK Civil Aviation Authority sets it at 220 pounds for flights under 1,500 km, 350 pounds for 1,500 to 3,500 km, and 260 or 520 pounds for longer flights depending on how late you arrive. It is per person and independent of the ticket price.

Is a package holiday safer than booking flights and hotels separately?

Financially, often yes in the UK. ATOL protection covers flight-inclusive packages so you are not left out of pocket if the company fails. Booking the same components separately usually leaves that protection behind, which is a real cost to weigh against any saving.
